Vasonatrin
Also known as Vasonatrin peptide; VNP
A synthetic 27-residue chimera combining CNP-22 with the ANP C-terminal pentapeptide for natriuretic peptide receptor research.
- Length
- 27 amino acids
- Half-life
- Not well characterised
- Mechanism
- Vasonatrin produces natriuretic peptide-like, cGMP-associated signalling through membrane guanylyl cyclase receptor pathways. Its CNP-derived structure supports investigation of NPR-B-associated activity, but exclusive receptor selectivity should not be assumed without direct comparison against NPR-A.
- Studied in
- Cultured vascular cells, isolated arteries and veins, and animal cardiovascular and renal models are used to investigate vasonatrin-associated cGMP signalling and vascular reactivity.
About Vasonatrin
Vasonatrin is a synthetic chimera described in the early 1990s, rather than a peptide isolated as an endogenous precursor product. Its design joins the complete 22-residue C-type natriuretic peptide sequence to the five-residue C-terminal segment of atrial natriuretic peptide. This produces a 27-residue molecule with a disulphide-constrained ring and an added tail. The appended ANP-derived sequence is NSFRY, providing a defined structural change for comparisons with unmodified CNP-22 in receptor and tissue assays.
The original research rationale was to explore whether adding an ANP-derived tail would alter the experimental profile of the CNP scaffold. Studies have examined cGMP generation, vascular smooth-muscle responses and renal physiology in laboratory models. These readouts do not, by themselves, identify a single receptor subtype. Because natriuretic peptide receptors differ across tissues, mechanistic work should compare NPR-A and NPR-B directly and distinguish signalling receptor activity from binding or clearance mediated by NPR-C.
Laboratory notes
- Confirm that the material is the CNP-22–NSFRY chimera; similarly described natriuretic peptide constructs may have different sequences.
- Verify disulphide formation and compare activity with a matched CNP-22 reference.
- Use separate NPR-A and NPR-B expression systems for receptor assignment rather than inferring selectivity from tissue cGMP alone.

Questions about Vasonatrin
Is vasonatrin a naturally occurring peptide?
It was designed as a synthetic chimera combining structural elements from CNP and ANP.
Which part of ANP is included?
The C-terminal pentapeptide NSFRY is appended to the full CNP-22 sequence.
Does a cGMP response prove NPR-B selectivity?
No. Both NPR-A and NPR-B generate cGMP, so receptor-defined assays are needed to distinguish their contributions.
Is Vasonatrin for human use?
No. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and is not for human or animal consumption.
