The peptide is utilized in cell culture and animal models to investigate melanocortin receptor signaling, pigmentation, and appetite regulation.

About Beta-MSH

Beta-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (β-MSH) is an endogenous peptide hormone cleaved from the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) precursor protein. It is a member of the melanocortin family, which also includes ACTH and α- and γ-MSH. Its primary structure consists of 22 amino acids in humans.

In experimental systems, β-MSH demonstrates agonist activity at several melanocortin receptors (MCRs). Its binding affinity is highest for MC1R, making it a useful tool for studying melanogenesis in melanoma cell lines. It also interacts with MC3R and MC4R, allowing for laboratory investigations into its role in energy homeostasis and inflammation.

Laboratory notes

  • β-MSH is susceptible to proteolytic degradation in serum-containing media.
  • Lyophilised material should be stored at -20°C and protected from moisture.
  • When reconstituting, gently swirl or pipette to dissolve; do not vortex, as this can cause aggregation.

Questions about Beta-MSH

What is the source of Beta-MSH?

Beta-MSH is an endogenous peptide produced through the enzymatic cleavage of its precursor protein, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), primarily in the pituitary gland.

Which receptors does Beta-MSH primarily target in vitro?

It is an agonist for several melanocortin receptors, showing notable activity at MC1R, MC3R, and MC4R, making it a tool for studying a range of physiological pathways.

How does Beta-MSH relate to α-MSH?

Both are derived from the same POMC precursor and share a core heptapeptide sequence, His-Phe-Arg-Trp, which is critical for their binding to melanocortin receptors. However, they differ in length and specific receptor affinities.

Is Beta-MSH for human use?

No. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and is not for human or animal consumption.
