Neuropeptide W-23
Also known as NPW23
A 23-amino acid endogenous ligand for GPR7 and GPR8 receptors, studied for its role in regulating energy balance and neuroendocrine systems.
- Length
- 23 amino acids
- Half-life
- Not well characterised
- Mechanism
- It acts as an endogenous ligand for the G protein-coupled receptors GPR7 and GPR8, also known as the neuropeptide W/B receptors (NPBWR1 and NPBWR2).
- Studied in
- Laboratory investigations explore its role in the regulation of feeding behavior, energy homeostasis, and neuroendocrine functions through central nervous system pathways.
About Neuropeptide W-23
Neuropeptide W-23 (NPW23) is one of two identified forms of Neuropeptide W, the other being NPW30. It is a 23-amino acid peptide characterized by an N-terminal tryptophan residue, which is critical for its receptor binding activity. NPW23 is expressed endogenously, primarily in specific nuclei of the hypothalamus and brainstem.
This peptide functions as a high-affinity agonist for two closely related orphan G protein-coupled receptors, GPR7 and GPR8. Activation of these receptors, found throughout the central nervous system, has been linked in animal models to the modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, appetite, and pain perception. It is therefore used as a tool to probe the function of these specific signaling pathways in neuroscience research.
Laboratory notes
- NPW23 and NPW30 are derived from the same precursor protein and differ in length at the C-terminus.
- Reconstitute in sterile, nuclease-free water or a suitable buffer; aliquot to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
- Binding affinity may differ between GPR7 and GPR8, a factor to consider in receptor-specific assays.

Questions about Neuropeptide W-23
What are the receptors for Neuropeptide W-23?
NPW23 is an endogenous ligand for the G protein-coupled receptors GPR7 (NPBWR1) and GPR8 (NPBWR2).
Where is NPW23 primarily found?
It is expressed endogenously in the central nervous system, with notable concentrations in the hypothalamus and brainstem regions involved in homeostatic regulation.
What is the difference between NPW23 and NPW30?
Both are processed from the same preproprotein. NPW23 is a 23-amino acid peptide, while NPW30 is an extended 30-amino acid version.
Is Neuropeptide W-23 for human use?
No. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and is not for human or animal consumption.
