alpha-Neoendorphin
Also known as α-Neoendorphin
An endogenous opioid peptide derived from prodynorphin, alpha-Neoendorphin is a potent kappa-opioid receptor agonist used in neurological research.
- Length
- 10 amino acids
- Half-life
- Rapidly degraded in plasma; very short.
- Mechanism
- This peptide is an endogenous ligand for the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR), exhibiting high affinity and selectivity.
- Studied in
- Laboratory studies investigate its role in nociception, neuroendocrine function, and models of stress response.
About alpha-Neoendorphin
α-Neoendorphin is a decapeptide with the sequence Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Leu-Arg-Lys-Tyr-Pro-Lys. It belongs to the dynorphin family of endogenous opioid peptides, all of which are derived from the precursor protein prodynorphin. Discovered in the hypothalamus, it is one of several active peptides cleaved from this precursor.
As a potent agonist for the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR), its binding initiates intracellular signaling cascades. Its high affinity for KOR makes it a valuable tool for in vitro studies exploring the function and distribution of this receptor system in CNS tissues. Research models utilize it to probe pathways related to analgesia, diuresis, and the regulation of hormone release.
Laboratory notes
- Reconstitute with sterile, deionised water to a concentration of 1 mg/mL or less.
- Prone to rapid enzymatic degradation in vivo and in plasma samples; use of protease inhibitors is recommended for stability.
- Store lyophilised powder at -20°C; after reconstitution, aliquot and store at -80°C to minimise freeze-thaw cycles.

Questions about alpha-Neoendorphin
What is the origin of alpha-Neoendorphin?
It is an endogenous peptide produced in the central nervous system, cleaved from the precursor protein prodynorphin.
Which receptor does this peptide primarily target?
alpha-Neoendorphin is a high-affinity agonist for the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR).
What is a key consideration for its use in cell culture?
Due to its short half-life, experiments should be designed to account for rapid degradation by peptidases present in serum or cell lysates.
Is alpha-Neoendorphin for human use?
No. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and is not for human or animal consumption.
