Uroguanylin
A 16-amino acid hormone that activates guanylate cyclase C (GC-C), used in research on intestinal and renal fluid balance.
- Length
- 16 amino acids
- Half-life
- Not well characterised, rapidly cleared by the kidney
- Mechanism
- Uroguanylin activates the guanylate cyclase C (GC-C) receptor, stimulating intracellular cyclic GMP (cGMP) production.
- Studied in
- It is studied in laboratory settings for its role in regulating intestinal and renal electrolyte and water transport.
About Uroguanylin
Uroguanylin is a 16-amino acid peptide hormone originally isolated from urine, but also produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Structurally similar to guanylin, it contains two essential disulfide bonds that create a stable, active tertiary structure. Its biological activity is notably higher in acidic environments, distinguishing its functional profile from that of guanylin.
Like guanylin, uroguanylin is an endogenous agonist for the guanylate cyclase C (GC-C) receptor. Upon binding, it triggers the conversion of GTP to cGMP, which initiates a signaling cascade that increases fluid secretion in the intestine and promotes natriuresis and diuresis in the kidney. In vitro and ex vivo models employ uroguanylin to investigate the molecular basis of GC-C-mediated physiological processes.
Laboratory notes
- Uroguanylin's activity is pH-dependent, showing higher potency at the acidic pH found in the upper small intestine.
- Two disulfide bridges are required for its receptor-binding conformation; avoid exposure to reducing agents.
- Reconstitution in a slightly acidic aqueous buffer is recommended for optimal solubility and stability.

Questions about Uroguanylin
Why is it called 'uroguanylin'?
It was first identified and isolated from urine, hence the 'uro-' prefix. It also functions as a circulating hormone that acts on the kidneys.
What cell lines are appropriate for studying uroguanylin?
Cell lines expressing the GC-C receptor, such as the human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line T84, are commonly used to measure cGMP production in response to uroguanylin stimulation.
Is this product for in vivo use?
This product is intended for in vitro research and laboratory use only. It is not for human or veterinary administration.
Is Uroguanylin for human use?
No. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and is not for human or animal consumption.
