beta-Neoendorphin

Also known as β-Neoendorphin

A prodynorphin-derived opioid peptide, beta-Neoendorphin is a KOR agonist used in laboratory models to study central nervous system pathways.

Length
9 amino acids
Half-life
Extremely short in plasma due to rapid enzymatic cleavage.
Mechanism
An endogenous nonapeptide that acts as a potent agonist at kappa-opioid receptors and to a lesser extent, mu- and delta-opioid receptors.
Studied in
It is used in neuroscience research to investigate pathways of nociception, reward, and neuroendocrine regulation.

About beta-Neoendorphin

beta-Neoendorphin is a nine-amino-acid peptide with the sequence Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Leu-Arg-Lys-Tyr-Pro, derived from the same prodynorphin precursor as alpha-Neoendorphin. It is structurally identical to alpha-Neoendorphin minus the C-terminal lysine residue. This small structural difference influences its receptor binding profile and biological activity.

Primarily acting as a kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) agonist, it displays less selectivity than dynorphin A, with some cross-reactivity at mu- and delta-opioid receptors. Its function is explored in in vitro receptor binding assays and in cellular models to understand the complexities of the endogenous opioid system.

Laboratory notes

  • Solution stability is poor; prepare fresh solutions for each experiment.
  • Handle with care to avoid contamination, as peptides are susceptible to microbial and enzymatic degradation.
  • Confirm peptide identity and purity via mass spectrometry and HPLC before use in critical assays.

Questions about beta-Neoendorphin

How does beta-Neoendorphin differ from alpha-Neoendorphin?

beta-Neoendorphin is a nonapeptide, lacking the C-terminal lysine found in the decapeptide alpha-Neoendorphin.

Is this peptide selective for one receptor?

It is a potent kappa-opioid receptor agonist but also shows some activity at mu- and delta-opioid receptors.

What is its precursor protein?

Like other dynorphins, it is processed from the precursor protein prodynorphin.

Is beta-Neoendorphin for human use?

No. It is supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory research and is not for human or animal consumption.
